Who Can Apply for the CDCP?

The CDCP is for Canadians without private dental insurance. You may qualify if you:

  • Do not have access to any private dental coverage
  • Are a Canadian resident for tax purposes
  • Filed your last year’s income tax return
  • Have an adjusted family net income below $90,000

The program started for seniors in late 2023. By May 2025, all uninsured adults were eligible, and coverage began on June 1, 2025.

Your coverage depends on your household’s adjusted net income. The government covers a portion of the CDCP fee guide, and you pay the rest if fees exceed the guide.

Services Covered Under CDCP

The CDCP covers a wide range of treatments when clinically necessary:

  • Routine exams and dental cleanings
  • X-rays, fluoride, and sealants
  • Fillings and extractions
  • Root canal treatments
  • Gum disease treatment
  • Crowns, dentures, and bridges (preauthorization may be required)
  • Oral surgery and sedation services

Starting mid-2025, limited orthodontic care for medical necessity will also be included. Meadowleaf Dental can guide you on which treatments need pre-approval.

Services NOT Covered Under CDCP

CDCP does not cover some procedures:

  • Cosmetic treatments (whitening, veneers)
  • Orthodontic care for purely cosmetic reasons
  • Dental implants, unless medically necessary
  • Treatments started before your coverage begins

How to Apply for the CDCP

Applying is straightforward:

    1. Confirm your eligibility using the criteria above
    2. Apply online through your My Service Canada Account, by phone, or by mail
    3. Provide your Social Insurance Number, income proof, and confirm no private insurance
    4. Once approved, you’ll receive a welcome letter with your start date and member ID

After approval, you can schedule your appointment with a dentist in The Meadows registered as a CDCP provider. Your dentist will bill Sun Life directly.

How to Renew Your CDCP Coverage

CDCP coverage needs to be renewed yearly to remain active. Renewal confirms your eligibility and updates your income information. To renew:

  • Log in to your My Service Canada Account
  • Verify your most recent tax return
